Miami vs. Western Michigan Postgame Notes

It was the fifth overtime game between Miami and Western Michigan with the Broncos holding a 4-1 edge over the RedHawks in overtime. Miami's lone overtime win against Western Michigan was at home in 1982, 57-53. The other three overtime games were all at Western Michigan. The last overtime game between the teams was at Western Michigan in 2008--double overtime--Miami lost 78-75. It was Miami's second overtime game of the season. The RedHawks defeated Ohio in Athens in triple overtime in the MAC opener, 92-88.

Junior forward Julian Mavunga sunk a layup with 19 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Western Michigan used a 12-1 run from 13:37 to 10:25 in the second half to close within four of the RedHawks, 54-50. WMU took its first lead since 19:29 in the first half when Nate Hutcheson sunk a 3-pointer at 1:53 to put the Broncos up 65-62.

Three-pointers by junior guard Chris McHenry, junior forward Julian Mavunga and senior forward Nick Winbush sparked a 13-2 Miami run in the first half to build a 15-5 RedHawk lead by the 15:21 mark. Miami led by as many as 18 in the opening half: 40-22 at 2:38 and 42-24 at 1:11.

It was the largest lead Miami has surrendered in a loss. The RedHawks led San Diego State by 11 before falling 77-56 on Nov. 22.

The RedHawks' 42 first-half points are their most in an opening half this season and the seventh time Miami has scored at least 40 points in a half this season. The most points in a half by the RedHawks was 47 in the second half against Xavier on Dec. 1

Western Michigan's win marked its first at Miami since Feb. 4, 1989 (81-79), making the Broncos 6-51 when playing in Oxford.

Western Michigan out-rebounded Miami 35-32. It is the first time Miami has been outrebounded in MAC play this season.

Junior forward Julian Mavunga scored 15 first-half points to lead Miami to a 42-28 halftime lead, its largest halftime lead of the season. It is the most points this season Mavunga has scored in an opening half. It ties for the second most in a half for a RedHawk this season. Mavunga has 16 in the second half against Akron on Jan. 19.

Junior forward Julian Mavunga had 22 points to lead the RedHawks. It was his four 20-point scoring effort of the season. The last time he scored in the 20s was against Akron on Jan. 19 when he tallied 25 points.

Senior forward Antonio Ballard suffered a severe injury to his left wrist in the final seconds of the Central Michigan game on Jan. 27 that required surgery, which he had on Friday evening in Grand Rapids, Mich. It is season-ending injury.

Freshman guard Quinten Rollins suffered a left wrist injury during practice on Jan. 27. He was evaluated by doctors on Friday (Jan. 28) morning. He is out for the next four weeks until his injury is re-evaluated by doctors at that time.

Miami has 12 assists and 11 turnovers against Western Michigan. It was just the third time this season Miami has had more assists than turnovers.

It was Throwback Saturday at Millett Hall with the RedHawks wearing retro uniforms. Uniform numbers special to the history of Miami Basketball were worn, including the retired numbers: Wayne Embry's #23, Wally Szczerbiak's #32, Ron Harper's #34, Dick Walls' #44 and Darrell Hedric's #86.
