Final StatsCINCINNATI, Ohio -- Miami's Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) won two individual events and swam on two victorious relay teams to lead the RedHawk men's swimming and diving squad to a 165-113 triumph at Cincinnati Friday night (Jan. 14).
The victory boosts Miami's dual-meet record to 3-4-1 for the 2010-11 season.
Gunnels, a junior, scored a team-leading 18 individual points, taking first place in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle events. He teamed with Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN), Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) and LUKE RHODENBAUGH (Cincinnati) to win the 200 medley relay event and with Rhodenbaugh, John Eick (Auburn, AL) and Mark Healey (Jenison, MI) on the first-place 200 freestyle relay.
Junior Brendan Melling (Solon) contributed 16 individual points to his team's victory, winning the 400 individual medley and placing second and third in two other events.
Hass won the 200 butterfly and placed second in another race to score 13 individual points.
Diver JIMMY BERES (Columbus) was victorious in both the one- and three-meter events.
Rhodenbaugh returned to his hometown and won the 50 freestyle.
Other RedHawk individual point scorers included Cincinnati St. Xavier High School graduate TOMMY JANSZEN (7), Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO, 7 points), Mike Cavanaugh (Bowling Green, 6 points), Ian Joyce (Hampden, MA, 6 points), Dan Nemeth (Highland Heights, 6 points), Sean Minderlein (Mullican Hill, NJ, 5 points), DARRIN SMITH (Bossier City, LA, 5 points), JON PROFITT (Wyoming, OH, 4 points), Eick (4), Healey (3), Ryan Neff (Chesterland, OH, 3 points), Mike Kline (Fort Wayne, IN, 2 points), Will Olson (Hopkinton, MA, 2 points), Sam Flessner (Springfield, IL, 2 points), TOM TILLEY (Rochester Hills, MI, 1 point), Whipp (1) and MAX CAIN (Louisville, KY, 1 point).
The Miami men don't compete again until Jan. 29 when they travel to Eastern Michigan for a dual meet.
