Beres Wins Twice, but Miami Swimmers Lose at EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Junior diver JIM BERES (Columbus) won both the one- and three-meter events, but host Eastern Michigan's swimmers won the remaining 14 events and defeated Miami University's men by a score of 180-116.
Beres defeated teammate Chris Hoppler (Germantown, MD) in the three-meter event, 350.03 to 332.55, and scored 347.33 in the one-meter competition.
Six Miami swimmers turned in a total of eight runner-up efforts against the Eagles.
Junior Chris Gunnels (Chapel Hill, NC) and senior Jason Hass (Jackson, MI) both had a pair of second-place performances. Gunnels placed second in both the 100 (46.60) and 200 freestyle (1:42.19) events, while Hass was second in the 100 (51.60) and 200 butterfly (1:53.65) races.
Also earning runner-up finishes were freshman Sean Minderlein (Mullica Hill, NJ) who took second in the 1000 freestyle (9:42.24), senior Mark Healey (Jenison) who placed second in the 50 freestyle (21.43), sophomore Alex Reinhardt (Littleton, CO) who finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:40.37), and sophomore Anderson Whipp (Fort Wayne, IN) who took second in the 200 individual medley (1:57.24).
The RedHawks' season dual meet record falls to 3-5-1.
Miami hosts Ball State next Saturday at the Nixon Aquatic Center. The first event begins at 3 p.m.
