OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University junior outfielder Adam Eaton was drafted in the 19th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Springfield, Ohio, native was the 571st player taken overall.
Eaton is the 29th RedHawk drafted since 2000 and the 66th Miami player ever taken in the MLB Draft. He also becomes the 11th player selected under head coach Dan Simonds and the highest RedHawk drafted since John Ely, who currently pitches for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was chosen in the third round in 2007.
Eaton, a two-time All-Mid-American Conference selection, led the MAC in both triples (9) and stolen bases (30) in 2010, while ranking third in slugging (.709), fourth in on-base percentage (.462) and fifth in total bases (156). The left-handed slugger also finished the year tied for sixth in the league in runs scored with 64 and ninth in home runs with 13. His nine three-baggers set a Miami single-season record and gave him 18 for his career, which is also a school record. Eaton's 30 steals, 156 total bases, 18 doubles and 64 runs scored all also rank in Miami's single-season top 10 lists.
A Second-Team All-Mideast Region selection in 2009, Eaton ranks fourth on Miami's career runs scored list with 169, ties for fifth in career stolen bases with 66, eighth in career total bases with 364 and ninth in career doubles with 45. The 5-foot-9 speedster was twice named MAC East Player of the Week (once as a sophomore and once this past year) and also ended the 2010 season on a career-best 23-game hitting streak.
Eaton started 55 of Miami's 56 games in 2010, batting a team-best .368 while driving in 55 RBI. He was second on the team with both 22 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games this year, including a Miami single-game record six hits against Furman Feb. 20 (second game of the season), while also scoring six runs and collecting five RBI, all career highs, with the six runs tying a MAC single-game record.
Eaton has played in 158 games in his three years as a RedHawk, starting 157, the most among any active player. He has totaled 129 RBI with 24 home runs while batting .340 during his Miami career.
The 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft concludes Wednesday with rounds 31-50.
