OXFORD, Ohio - A convincing doubleheader sweep over Eastern Michigan Friday gave head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly her 100th win in four seasons in charge of the Miami softball team. The RedHawks won the opener 3-1, and took the nightcap 10-1 in five innings. Miami improves to 18-15 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 11-17 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.
It took the RedHawk offense awhile to get going in the opener as they didn't score until the sixth inning. Starter Jessica Simpson kept them in the game by allowing only one run in the top of the fourth. She gave up only three hits in seven innings pitched, while striking out four.
In the bottom of the sixth, Daniela Torres led off with a double down the leftfield line. A groundout from Meghan Mawn moved her over to third. Alicia Hogl doubled to left field to score Torres and put Miami on the board. Sarah Billstrom singled to left field to score Hogl, while Shannon Tillett completed the scoring by singling to centerfield to score Billstrom.
Torres and Billstrom were the top hitters for the RedHawks in the opening game, each going 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Eastern Michigan starting pitcher Jenna Ignowski walked the bases loaded to begin game two. Billstrom followed with a double to deep centerfield that scored both Torres and Mawn. A fielding error by the first baseman made it 3-0, which was followed by a Kathryn Russette RBI groundout that cored Billstrom. Two batters later, Jenna McGivney made it 5-0 when her single scored Tillett.
Miami kept up the scoring in each of the next two innings. In the bottom of the second Russette singled to left field to score both Mawn and Torres. In the bottom of the third, Alicia Hogl hit her second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the leftfield wall that made it 10-0. The Eagles would eventually score a run in the top of the fourth, but down nine after five innings the game was called due to the run-rule.
Meredith Linch continued her string of strong performances with her third consecutive victory. She threw five innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out eight. Russette finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Hogl was 1-for-2 with one walk, two runs scored and three RBI.
Miami completes the weekend with two single games against Central Michigan. The RedHawks will host the Chippewas on Saturday at 2 p.m. and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
