OXFORD, Ohio - A three-run sixth inning broke open a close game and gave Miami a 6-3 victory over Bowling Green on Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 22-20 overall and 7-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons fall to 10-19 overall and 6-7 in the MAC.
Miami opened the scoring the bottom of the second. Alicia Hogl led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Jenna McGivney sacrifice bunted her over to third base. Briana Burke then brought Hogl home with a single to left field.
The RedHawks added single runs in each of the next two innings. In the bottom of the third, Meghan Mawn doubled to left field to score Daniela Torres. In the fourth, Jordan McElroy walked with the bases loaded, which forced home Ashley Zappia.
Starting pitcher Meredith Linch was cruising along until the top of the fifth when Bowling Green tagged her for two runs to pull the score to 3-2. However, with the bases loaded and two outs, she forced Susan Sontag to fly out to right field to end any further damage.
Miami put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second, a throwing error on McElroy's at bat brought home a run to make it 4-2. Two batters later, Sarah Billstrom singled to left center to score both Torres and McElroy and make it 6-2. The Falcons added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.
Billstrom finished the game 2-for4 with two RBI. Burke was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Linch pitched seven innings, giving up three earned runs and seven hits. She struck out four.
Miami completes its weekend series with Bowling Green on Sunday. Game time has been moved to 11:30 a.m. due to the threat of inclement weather.
