BUFFALO, N.Y. - Miami earned a split in its doubleheader with Buffalo on Sunday. After falling, 4-1, in the first game, the RedHawks took a 2-1 decision in the nightcap. Miami improves to 20-19 overall and 5-5 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls are 14-24 overall and 4-6 in the MAC.
In the opener, Buffalo struck first with a run in the bottom of the second. The RedHawks quickly answered in the top of the third of the third inning when freshman Taylor Rice hit her first career home run, a line shot over the centerfield fence, to tie the score at one.
Unfortunately for Miami, the Bulls were able to retake the lead in the bottom of the third and added insurance runs in the fifth and the sixth. Meanwhile, the RedHawks were able to manage only one more hit and ultimately fell, 4-1.
Rice finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Also finishing 1-for-3 were Daniela Torres and Sarah Billstrom. Jessica Simpson took the loss, giving up two runs on six hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
Buffalo took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game two with a solo shot to centerfield. With one out in the top of the third, Torres singled through the right side. Jordan McElroy followed with a walk, and a wild pitch moved each of them up a base. Meghan Mawn then came to the plate and smoked a double to leftfield to bring both of them home and put Miami in front, 2-1.
That proved to be all starter Meredith Linch would need as she shut down the Bulls the rest of the way. For the game, Linch gave up one run on seven hits while striking out four.
Mawn finished the second game 1-for-3 with two RBI. Torres was 2-for-4 on the day.
Miami returns to action Friday through Sunday when it hosts the Strikeout Cancer Weekend at the Miami Softball Stadium. On Friday, Toledo will be in town for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. The RedHawks will then take on Bowling Green in single games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
