Softball Earns 8-4 Win Over Central Michigan

OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami RedHawks earned a series split with Central Michigan after an 8-4 victory on Sunday. Miami improves to 19-16 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas fall to 17-12 overall and 4-4 in the MAC.

Central Michigan struck first with two runs in the top of the second inning off starter Meredith Linch. Miami answered with two runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. With runners on second and third, Jordan McElroy smoked a shot to right field that scored both Taylor Rice and Kathryn Russette.

The bottom of the third saw the RedHawks load the bases with only one out. Shannon Tillett then drew a walk to force in a run. Russette followed with a deep flyout to centerfield that allowed Daniela Torres to score on a sacrifice.

Miami kept up the pressure with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Torres doubled through the right side of the infield to score both McElroy and Rice. Two batters later, Alicia Hogl singled to score Torres. The RedHawks would make it 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Meghan Mawn singled to right center to score Ashley Zappia.

Meanwhile Jessica Simpson came into the game in relief beginning with the third inning and helped shutdown the Chippewa attack. She allowed only a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning which gave the game its final score at 8-4. Simpson finished with five innings pitched, giving up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four.

Torres finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. McElroy was 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored. Rice was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.

The RedHawks hit the road for their MAC games next weekend. Miami will take on Kent State in a doubleheader on Friday, Apr. 16 starting at 1 p.m. The team will then travel to Buffalo for single games on Apr. 17 at 2 p.m. and Apr. 18 at 1 p.m.
