NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Strong winds at the Vanderbilt Black & Gold meet Saturday were not enough to slow down the Miami University women's track and field team, which opened its 2010 outdoor campaign by earning six event victories at the Vanderbilt Track Complex.
Junior Kelley Miller (Dublin, Ohio) wasted no time making an indent on the Miami record books, as she broke teammate Amanda Mirochna's mark of 4:26.77 in the 1500m run by finishing first in 4:26.47. Mirochna (Naperville, Ill.) meanwhile, took second in the race in 4:31.40.
"It was a great first meet. It was really windy but we had nice weather and everyone competed well," head coach Kelly Phillips said. "Mirochna and Katie Lenahan also ran well (behind Miller) in the 1500m. As windy as it was, everyone just ran and got after it."
Miami's lone other win on the track came in the 4x400m relay, as junior Ruth Rasch (Bellbrook, Ohio), sophomore Diona Graves (Fenton, Mo.), freshman Maria Holztrager (Hinckley, Ohio) and sophomore Rachael Clay (Rossford, Ohio) combined to clock in at 3:53.90. The 'Hawks also took second in the 4x400 and placed second in 4x100m relay in 47.20, in which Graves also ran.
Graves also was the runner up in the 100-meter dash in a personal-best 12.02, ranking her seventh all-time at Miami, while Clay took third in the 200m dash, also in a lifetime-best time of 25.12. Holztrager placed third in the 400m dash for Miami in 1:01.46.
The RedHawks dominated the field events, led by junior Magda Wikar (Winnetka, Ill.), who took first in the long jump in a personal-best 18-9.75 (5.73m), which moves her into sixth among all-time RedHawk performers. Senior Nicki Mitchell (Lake Forest, Ill.) took second in 18-5.75 (5.63m). Junior Hope Alexander (Wilmington, Del.) also picked up a win for Miami in the triple jump in 38-4.75 (11.70m).
Sophomores Alexandra Roberts (Hilliard, Ohio) and Samantha Gable (Greenfield, Ind.) went 1-2 in both the shot put and discus. Roberts had a toss of 45-3.75 (13.81m) in the shot put and 139-01 (42.39m) in the discus to win both events, while Gable recorded a heave of 44-2 (13.46m) in the shot put and 132-6 (40.40m) in the discus. On Friday night, Gable took second in the hammer throw while Alexander and Roberts placed second and third, respectively.
Miami had two more second-place finishes at the meet, as senior Kristen Mathews (Griffith, Ind.) was runner-up in the high jump (5-3/1.60m) while freshman Layne Baggett (Pittsburgh, Pa.) clocked in at 14.35 in the 100-meter hurdles to take second.
The RedHawks return to action next weekend at the Tiger Track Classic, hosted by Auburn University April 2-3.
