Final Stats
OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawk softball team closed out the Miami Invitational with an 8-0 win over Toledo on Sunday. The RedHawks improve to 11-13 overall, while the Rockets fall to 6-19. Despite playing the Mid-American Conference opponent, the game does not count in the MAC standings.
Miami won its home tournament with a 3-1 record. Robert Morris finished 3-2, Michigan State was 2-2, Toledo was 2-3 and Canisus was 1-3.
The RedHawks got their first run in the bottom of the third inning when Jordan McElroy doubled home Ashley Zappia.
The big blow came in the bottom of the fourth when Miami scored seven runs, a season-high for a single frame. Meghan Mawn, Alicia Hogl and Sarah Billstrom loaded the bases with one out. Shannon Tillett followed with a single that scored Mawn. Jenna McGivney singled through the right side to score Hogl. Casey Drees made it 4-0 with a single that scored Billstrom. After McGivney scored on a wild pitch, Daniela Torres doubled to deep left centerfield to score McElroy and Drees. Hogl concluded the scoring with a double that brought home Torres.
Jessica Simpson pitched well for the RedHawks keeping the Rockets off the board. She gave up six hits and struck out six in five innings of work.
Miami spread the wealth around with eight different players recording hits in the game. It was led by Torres, who was 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
The RedHawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Purdue for a 3 p.m. game.
