Simpson Shuts Out Seattle On Final Day of Husky Classic

SEATTLE - The Miami softball team earned a split on its final day at the Husky Softball Classic on Saturday. The RedHawks fell to Portland State, 6-3, in the morning, before coming back to defeat Seattle, 2-0, in the afternoon. Miami improves to 8-10 on the season.
In the game against Seattle, Jessica Simpson was the star throwing her second complete game shutout of the year. She gave up only five hits and struck out six to improve her record to 6-5.
The RedHawks got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Meghan Mawn singled to centerfield. Daniela Torres singled to advance her to third, and Alicia Hogl followed with a single to center that brought Mawn home. In the bottom of the sixth Mawn added an insurance run when she singled to score Ashley Zappia.
Mawn finished the game 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Hogl was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
In the earlier game against Portland State, the Vikings struck first with two runs in the first inning and another in the top of the third. Miami answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth when Mawn was sent home from third base after the PSU pitcher was called for an illegal pitch.
The big blow for the Vikings came in the top of the sixth inning when with the bases loaded, a triple off reliever Shalise Lugo brought all three runs home and made it 6-1. Miami answered with two in the bottom of the sixth when Hogl doubled to score Jordan McElroy and Sarah Billstrom singled to score Hogl. The RedHawks were unable to bring any runs home in the bottom of the seventh, and Portland State escaped with the 6-3 win.
Hogl finished the game 1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Billstrom was 1-for-3 with one RBI. After playing its first 18 games on the road,
Miami will be home for several games next week at the Miami Softball Stadium. It begins with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Western Illinois on Tuesday. Then Fri.-Sun. Mar. 19-21, the RedHawks welcome Canisius, Michigan State, Robert Morris and Toledo to Oxford for the Miami Softball Invitational.
