Field Hockey Comes Up Short in MAC Championship Game

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. - A late goal off a rebound with less than three minutes remaining proved to be the difference as Kent State defeated Miami, 3-2, in the MAC Championship game on Saturday. The Golden Flashes improve to 15-6 and will advance to the NCAA Play-In Game on Tuesday. The RedHawks finish their season at 14-7.

At the conclusion of the game, Mary Hull, Sarah Mueller and Kylie Landeros were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The first half was scoreless and very evenly played. Both team recorded five shots and had three penalty corner attempts.

Miami got on the board first in the 45th minute. Amanda Seeley found Landeros in the front of the cage, and Landeros one-timed the ball into the net. It stayed that way until the 51st minute, when Kent State's Rachel Miller tied it up with a goal of her own.

In the 54th minute the teams traded goals yet again. Emily Gruesser intercepted a pass and scored on a breakaway at the 53:11 mark. However, only 31 seconds later Debbie Bell answered to retie the score at two. It stayed that way until the 68th minute. After the RedHawks had stopped two shots on a penalty corner, Bell found the rebound and was able to put home the game winner.

For the game the Golden Flashes outshot Miami, 16-9. Kent State also had the penalty corner advantage at 9-6. Gruesser led the RedHawks with two shots on goal. Mueller finished the game with four saves in net. Miami finishes the 2010 season with 14 wins, which ties for third most in school history.

Playing their last game for the RedHawks on Saturday were seniors Hull, Kate Snyder and Christine Brightwell.
