COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Miam University's men's basketball team used a 13-0 run from the end of the first half and into the second half to pull within five points of No. 3 Ohio State with 16:50 to play on Friday afternoon at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes, however, pulled away to a 66-45 win.
Orlando Williams led Miami (2-4) with 13 points, while Julian Mavunga added 11. Antonio Ballard grabbed a season-best 12 rebounds, one off his career high. Ohio State (5-0) had three players reach double figures, led by David Lighty with 21 points and six assists.
Neither team found the basket until nearly four minutes into the game when Miami opened the scoring on two Allen Roberts' free throws at the 16:16 mark. But Ohio State followed with nine straight points over the next 2:22 to hold a 9-2 advantage.
After a Mavunga three, the Buckeyes rattled off another 13 in a row to up the lead to 17, 22-5, with 7:42 left in the period. The margin reached its biggest point, 18 at 28-10, with 1:53 left before Miami made its charge.
The RedHawks ended the half with six straight points, a three-point play by Quinten Rollins followed by an Williams three, to trail by 12 points, 28-16, at the break.
The streak continued for Miami out of the locker room as the RedHawks tallied seven straight points at the start of the second to close to within five, 28-23. Mavunga tossed in a layup at 19:07, Nick Winbush sunk a trey at 18:10 and Ballard capped the run with a laypu at the 16:40 mark. But the Buckeyes ran off six straight points to start a 22-6 run and never looked back.
The RedHawks held their own on the boards, collecting 31 to Ohio State's 32, and had just two more turnovers (15-13). Coming into the game, OSU was outrebounding opponents by an 11.8 margin.
Miami returns to action on Wednesday when it welcomes Xavier to Millett Hall. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
