Both teams came out strong to begin the game with matching 3-for-4 shooting performances. Orlando Williams recorded five points in the first four minutes of play, completing an old-fashioned three-point play to conclude the run.
Miami's hot streak lasted longer as they opened a 17-6 lead to begin the game. During the run Williams was perfect from the field (1-for-1) and the free throw line (3-for-3), while Julian Mavunga contributed four points on a basket and two free throws.
San Diego State answered with a 25-2 run over a period of 4:06. James Rahon had 11 points for the Aztecs during the run, which was ended when Mavunga hit a three-pointer at the top of the key.
Miami closed the first half on a 15-8 run to pull within five at the break. Allen Roberts had seven points, including a three-pointer with two seconds remaining.
Kawhi Leonard had 10 rebounds during the first half for San Diego State. He finished with 13 rebounds, a new season-high. His career high is 21 rebounds set at UNLV on Mar. 13, 2010.
Miami opened the second half on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 39. It would be the final tie of the contest as San Diego State answered with a 25-0 run take a 64-39 lead. Miami did not score for a period of 12:35. The run was broken by a three-point basket from Chris McHenry at the 5:13 mark.
Chris McHenry finished with a new career high of nine points on 3-for-5 shooting. All of his baskets came from behind the three-point line. Miami showed considerable improvement at the free throw line on Monday.
After shooting only 66 percent against IUPUI on Saturday and 67 percent against Green Bay on Sunday, the RedHawks were 12-for-15 from the line (80 percent) against the Aztecs.
