Final Stats
TOLEDO - The Miami volleyball team's run in the MAC Tournament came to an end in the semifinals as the 11th seeded RedHawks fell to second seed Ohio, 0-3 (19-15, 19-25, 22-25) Saturday night. Miami falls to 12-20 overall, while the Bobcats advance to the championship against Northern Illinois on Sunday and improve their record to 20-11.
In the second set, senior middle hitter Michele Metzler became the 19th player in Miami history to record 1,000 career kills. She finished the match with six kills and now has 1,004 for her career.
Miami fell behind 7-10 to begin set one. Two service aces from Amy Kendall helped bring the RedHawks back within one, but Ohio quickly expanded the lead back out to four at 14-10. Colleen Loftus responded with three kills and Amy Raseman contributed two as Miami followed with the next six points in a row to take a 16-14 lead. From there, the Bobcats would go on a 11-3 run to regain the advantage and take the first set by a score of 25-19.
After Ohio opened set two with a kill, Metzler was able to tool the Bobcat middle hitters to record her historic 1,000th kill. Another kill from Metzler along with kills from Cassie Farrell and Raseman put the RedHawks in front 4-3. A 12-4 run by the Bobcats put them in front by a 15-8 score. Trailing 10-17, Miami began to make its move. Two kills from Farrell, along with one from Madison Dodd were part of a 7-1 run that brought the RedHawks to within one at 17-18. Ohio scored the next two points to regain a three point advantage, but a Metzler kill and a service ace by Kendall once again brought Miami to within one at 19-20. From there however, the Bobcats would go on to capture the next six points and earn a 25-19 victory.
Trailing 7-9 in set three, a kill from Raseman along with three Ohio attack errors put Miami in front 11-9 and forced a Bobcat timeout. The break would prove to be the difference as an 8-3 run would put Ohio up by a score of 17-14. Two kills from Raseman would help the RedHawks get as close as two points, but they would get no closer and the Bobcats finished off the match with a 25-22 win.
Raseman led Miami with 10 kills, while Madison Hardy had 15 digs. The difference in the match proved to be the blocking, as Ohio outblocked the RedHawks, 16-0.
Miami concludes the 2010 season when it hosts 18th-ranked Cincinnati on Friday at 5 p.m.
