TOLEDO - Facing match point in a dramatic set five, the 11th seeded Miami volleyball team fought it off twice and came back to capture a 3-2 (12-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14) victory over the third seeded Western Michigan Broncos in the Mid-American Conference quarterfinals Friday. Lisa Treadway recorded her first career double-double with a career-high 13 kills and 19 digs to pace the RedHawks. Miami improves to 12-19 on the season, while WMU falls to 22-9.

The RedHawks advance to the MAC Semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. They will take on the winner of the Ohio vs. Buffalo match on Saturday at 7 p.m.

WMU used an 11-3 run to begin the match to take control of set one. Amy Raseman and Michele Metzler each recorded two kills apiece, but the Broncos were able to increase the advantage to 20-8. Raseman scored two more kills as Miami eventually pulled to within 10 at 12-22, but Western Michigan scored the final three points to take the first set, 25-12.

Set two turned into a completely different story for the RedHawks. Tied at seven, Metzler scored two consecutive blocks to give Miami a 9-7 lead. Tied at 11, kills from Michelle Mangia and Raseman would give the RedHawks a lead they would not relinquish. With the score 18-17 in favor of Miami, a Bronco service error, two kills from Treadway and another kill from Mangia gave the RedHawks a five point lead at 22-17. That would prove to be enough as the teams traded points and Miami eventually came away with a 25-21 win.

Trailing 6-8 in set three, a kill by Metzler sparked an 8-3 run that put Miami in front, 14-11. The Broncos would eventually fight back to tie the score at 20. From there, kills by Cassie Farrell, Metzler and Treadway put down kills to give the RedHawks a 23-20 lead. WMU scored two of the next three points to close to within two at 22-24, but Amy Kendall set up Metzler perfectly in the middle to put down the winning kill and give the Red and White the set at 25-22.

Miami fought out of an early deficit to tie the fourth set at 10. Tied at 17, a 5-1 run by WMU would prove to be the difference. In front 22-18, the Broncos would not allow the RedHawks to get any closer than three points and tied the match up with a 25-21 victory.

The teams traded side outs for the first 12 points of the fifth and final set. Tied at six, the Broncos scored the next three points to take a 9-6 lead. Kills from Raseman and Treadway helped pull Miami to within one at 9-10, but WMU quickly scored the next two points to regain the three point advantage. A 3-1 run by the RedHawks made it 12-13, but Western Michigan again answered with a kill to create match point. From there kills by Colleen Loftus and Farrell, along with a tremendous effort to dig some balls that very nearly hit the ground, tied the score at 14. Miami forced the Broncos into an attack error on the next serve to create match point for itself. After a WMU timeout, the Broncos hit the next attack long and to the left of court to give the RedHawks the victory at 16-14.

Raseman led Miami with 16 kills, while Metzler finished with 12. Metzler is only two kills away from becoming the 19th player in school history to reach 1,000 kills for a career. Kendall finished with a double-double of 35 assists and 14 digs, while Loftus also had a strong game featuring seven kills and 17 digs.
