ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Miami field hockey team fought hard to overcome a two goal deficit against 15th-ranked Michigan on Friday, but ultimately fell, 4-3, in overtime. The RedHawks fall to 8-5 overall, while the Wolverines improve to 8-5.
"I thought our team played like champs," said head coach Jill Reeve. "After some bad luck goals early, they really fought their way back into the game. With two teams playing evenly it could have gone either way, and it just didn't go our way today. I was very proud of their effort and it was a well played game."
Miami struck first when Emily Gruesser put home the rebound of Mary Hull's shot in the 16th minute. That would be all the RedHawks would manage in the first half however, as Michigan responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Hull came through with a deflection of Christine Brightwell's pass to pull Miami within one early in the second half. In the 65th minute, the RedHawks tied it up at three when Gruesser scored her second of the game, taking a pass from Brightwell and beating the goalie to her left. Miami's defense led by Amanda Seeley held strong throughout the period, keeping the Wolverines off the board and sending the game to overtime.
Playing seven-on-seven, the two teams played nearly the entire first overtime session before Rachael Mack was able to score the game winner past RedHawk goalkeeper Sarah Mueller in the 85th minute.
Hull led the RedHawks with three shots on goal. For the game, Michigan outshot Miami, 12-7. The Wolverines also had the penalty corner advantage at 10-4.
The RedHawks return to Mid-American Conference action on Sunday when they travel to Central Michigan for a noon game.
