OXFORD, Ohio--The Nixon Aquatic Center will be filled with RedHawks, Boilermakers and Vikings this weekend as Coach Pete Lindsay'S Miami University men's swimming team entertains Purdue and Cleveland State.
Friday's meet against the Boilermakers begins at 6 p.m. at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Saturday's contest versus Cleveland State commences at 2 p.m. There is no admission charge for either meet.
The Miami-Purdue swimming series has been an annual event, according to Lindsay.
"We've got a long tradition with Purdue," he said. "We opened their pool and they opened ours. (Purdue coach) Dan Ross tries to match up with what we have, so we should have some good races on Friday.
Ross confirmed that he will enter several of his underclassmen swimmers in Friday's meet as he continues to evaluate his roster in the early stages of the young season. Brian Kiel won the 100 backstroke and Matt Friede touched first in the 100 freestyle. Danny Tucker took the 50 free in an event in which the top four finishers were all Purdue freshmen. Kiel also finished second in the 200 free while Tucker was second in the 100 free.
"The Miami meet is one we've had on the schedule for years, home and away," Ross continued. "Miami coach Pete Lindsay and I go way back and I remember swimming against him in the 70s. It's a meet we like to do early in the year. I have the utmost respect for Pete Lindsay. He's one of the best coaches I have been around. And Scott Usher, his assistant, trained at Purdue for about two years before the 2008 Olympic Trials. It will be fun to see him."
The RedHawk and Boilermaker divers competed last weekend as part of the women's swimming and diving meet at Purdue, so the Boilermaker men will take a 27-10 lead into Friday's event.
