Miami vs. Western Michigan
January 29, 2010
Oxford, Ohio - Steve Cady Arena
Sophomore defenseman Cameron Schilling scored Miami's first goal of the night from the right point on a power play, giving him just his second goal of the year, with his other coming all the way back on Oct. 16 at New Hampshire, which was just Miami's third game of the year. It was his first-career power-play goal.
Junior forward Carter Camper earned an assist on Miami's first goal (by Schilling), giving him an assist in four straight games and five out of six. He has six assists in his last four contests and 17 on the year, which leads the team. Camper has six points in five-career game vs. Western Michigan. Friday night's contest was also Camper's 100th career game as a RedHawk, as he added a third-period goal, as well for a multi-point night, his eighth of the year.
Senior forward Gary Steffes tallied his first point of the season Friday night, assisting on sophomore defenseman Chris Wideman's first-period goal.
After scoring just 12 goals in Miami's first 25 first periods of the season, the RedHawks have now scored five goals in their last two opening stanzas after tallying two Friday night against the Broncos and three at Alaska last Saturday.
Senior forward Jarod Palmer tallied Miami's lone goal in the second period, giving him 11 goals on the year, which is second on the team. It was his fourth goal in five games. Freshman forward Reilly Smith assisted on the goal, giving him three assists in his last four games. Smith had just three assists in his first 23 games this year, prior to his recent outburst. Junior forward Andy Miele registered the other assist on the score, giving him 15 on the year, which is now tied for second on the team, 10 of which have come in CCHA play, also second on the team.
While shorthanded in the third period, junior forward Andy Miele stole the puck and was on a breakaway when he was taken down to earn Miami's second penalty shot of the year. Miele was unable to convert, however, as the RedHawks are now 0-for-2 on penalty shots this year with the other coming Dec. 4, 2009 vs. Notre Dame, when junior forward Carter Camper was denied.
Junior forward Tommy Wingels notched his 15th assist of the year on Miami's fourth goal, which is tied for second on the team. Sophomore defenseman Chris Wideman added the first assist on the goal and combined with his score in the first period, he finished with two points, just his second multi-point game of the year.
The RedHawks out-shot Western Michigan, 43-19, on Friday night, with the 43 shots on goal tying a season high, which Miami also fired against the Broncos earlier this year on Nov. 21, 2009. Miami has now out-shot its opponent in 24 of 27 games this year. The RedHawks also reached double-figure shot totals in all three stanzas Friday, marking the 48th time in 81 periods this year that Miami has done so.
With the win, Miami is now unbeaten in 17 straight CCHA contests since losing in overtime to Michigan State on Oct. 24. The RedHawks are also unbeaten in seven straight games against the Broncos, including a win and a tie earlier this year in Kalamazoo. The win also gave Miami a slight edge in the all-time series with WMU, as the 'Hawks now lead 50-49-8.
Miami is now 14-0-0 when leading after two periods this year, 11-0-3 when scoring first and 10-0-2 when scoring four or more goals on the campaign.
