HAMILTON, Ohio -- No. 70 Miami captured two doubles wins to open a 1-0 lead, but No. 46 Indiana rallied with four singles wins to squeeze past the RedHawks, 4-3, Saturday morning at the Riverside Racquet Club.
Cara Wald and Riekie Honiball started things off with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles before Stephanie Danesis and Megan Marzolf put Miami ahead 1-0 with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles. The other double match went to Indiana as Anastasia Dracheva and Brintney Larson fell 8-6 in the No. 2 spot.
The Hoosiers (3-0) came out strong in singles play, winning three straight to open a 3-1 lead. Danesis (No. 2), Dracheva (No. 1) and Larson (No. 4) fell in straight sets, winning just three games apiece.
But Miami (1-1) started to rally. Martzolf completed a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 3 to make the score 3-2, then Honiball evened the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5.
The decision hinged on the outcome of the No. 6 singles match between Wald and Indiana's Megan Matter. Wald trailed 3-0 in the first set, but tied things at 3-3. At 4-4, Wald was broken and wound up losing 6-4. She also dropped the second by a 6-3 count, sending the Hoosiers to the win.
