Friday's Miami-Cincinnati swim meet proved to be a strong night not only for the women's team as a whole, but also for individuals Kasey Carpenter and Kelsey Anagnos who captured two victories apiece.
The RedHawk women came out victorious, 180.5 to 119.5, at the Nixon Aquatic Center to improve their dual-meet record to 6-3. Miami is the number one ranked team in the nation among Mid-Major schools.
Carpenter's two wins came in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, while teammate Kelsey Anagnos took first in both diving events.
The first individual event of the evening, the 1000-yard freestyle, saw an excellent race by junior Miranda Kaltenborn. She recorded her best time of the season at 10:25.77. Also earning points for the women's team were freshman Claire Dickmann (10:33.89), and junior Sarah Bullock (10:42.30).
UC swimmer Liz Hansson took first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.62. Miami sophomore Chelsey Bruington was close behind with a swim of 1:55.21.
As the meet moved to the 100 backstroke, the RedHawks finished 1-2-3 with Carpenter (58.73), freshman Leah Thornton (58.21) and classmate Jenny Warmolts (1:00.00) taking the top three places.
In the 100 breaststroke, Miami's Kelsey Vehr (1:05.24) and Megan Brunn (1:05.93) took the top two spots.
The RedHawks' Maegan O'Connor made a quick finish during the 200-yard butterfly to tie for first with UC swimmer Laurie Caudy (2:07.34).
UC's Lange Gilby clocked in at 23:78 in the 50 freestyle to earn the top spot, while freshman Bekka Westrick placed second (23.95).
The Miami women's diving team helped the RedHawks take the lead over UC, with top-two finishes by senior Kelsey Anagnos (323.33 1M, 282.82 3M) and freshman Danica Roskos (298.43 1M, 268.72 3M). That vaulted Miami into the lead, 88.5 to 61.5.
Allison Way took second in the 100 freestyle (52.60) behind UC senior Gilby Lange (51.68).
Carpenter gained her second win of the night and ninth victory of the season in the 200 backstroke, clocking in at 2:03.16.
Head coach Dave Jennings said, "Kasey looked a lot stronger and smoother than she's looked at any time this year. We're excited to see what she can do by the end of the year."
By the 200 breaststroke, Miami's women had pulled ahead with a solid lead of 127.5 to 79.5. Megan Brunn took first in the event (2:19.50), Kelsey Vehr placed second (2:20.81), and Katie Arlinghaus finished third (2:27.38).
Claire Dickmann earned her only win of the night in the 500 freestyle, beating out the competition with a time of 5:07.58.
The top spot in the 100 butterfly was won by Ellie de Jong of UC (55.91). Miami's Allison Way followed in second with a time of 56.64.
Another RedHawk win was earned in the 200 individual medley as Brunn swam a time of 2:08.52. Taking second in the event was freshman teammate Taylor Garber (2:10.52).
Top honors in the 200 freestyle relay were taken by the UC A-team with a time of 1:35.55. Miami's A-team (Sarah Radke, Bekka Westrick, Katie Arlinghaus and Way) placed third (1:36.21).
"We saw a very good UC team tonight," said Jennings. "They raced very well, so we had to really compete to defeat them. This was an adjustment week for us. We didn't look too bad, but we've definitely got some things to work on, and we're looking for a better performance next week in Athens."
Miami travels to meet Ohio University on January 23rd.
