OXFORD, Ohio - An all-around effort and a large early lead helped the Miami field hockey team to a 5-1 victory at home over the17th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. The RedHawks improve to 5-4-0 this season while No. 17 Indiana falls to 5-3-0.
The RedHawk offense proved a tough obstacle for the Hoosiers as the majority of first period play was spent on Indiana territory. Leading Miami's offensive efforts in the opening half was senior midfielder/back Maggie Marcum who scored twice for the RedHawks at 17:16 and 31:14, with assists from Christine Brightwell and Kate Snyder, respectively.
Junior midfielder Brightwell also added to Miami's first half tally with a goal off of a rebound 22 minutes into the period.
"Marcum and Mary Hull created outstanding front pressure on the other team," said Head Coach Jill Reeve on Miami's play. "It helped our attack and we were able to be dominant offensively. Katie Brightwell also did a great job organizing in the back, keeping the team strong and together."
The RedHawks kept the momentum in their favor starting off the second half as senior forward Snyder opened the period with a goal at 38:14 off of a rebound, putting the team ahead of the Hoosiers 4-0.
Though Indiana responded at 42:34 with a goal by Brenna Moeljadi from Meg O'Connell off of a penalty corner, Miami's defense held throughout the second period, keeping them at one goal. Olivia Miller rounded out the scoring efforts for the RedHawks with her goal from Jackie Nguyen at 46:49.
"We played a good 60 minutes today... that goal of 70 minutes is definitely within reach," commented Reeve of her team's efforts today. "I'm proud of them. We played our game today, it was fast and exciting. Central Michigan will be another big game for us, we will have to be professional and execute our special situations."
The RedHawks now take to the road to face conference foe Central Michigan this Sunday at noon.
