OXFORD, Ohio - The Pacific Tigers captured the 2009 Best Western Sycamore Invitational with a 3-1 victory over Miami. The RedHawks, who went 2-1 in the tournament, fall to 3-6 overall, while the Tigers improve to 7-1.
After the match Maria Leahy and Andrea Atteberry were named to the All Tournament team, joined by tournament MVP Dancyne Kama, Rebekah Torres and Mallori Gibson from Pacific, Meghan Gilroy from Troy and Ashley Asing from St. John's. Pacific jumped to a 9-5 lead in the first set.
The teams traded points until Leahy and Atteberry each recorded kills to pull Miami within two at 13-15. Pacific went on a 4-2 run to expand the advantage to 19-15. With the score 23-20 in favor of the Tigers, Leahy and Amy Raseman each scored kills to put the RedHawks down one at 22-23. The teams traded the next two points, and Pacific won the set 25-23 by putting down the final kill.
An 8-2 start to set two was the key for Pacific. Two kills from Raseman helped the RedHawks pull to within three at 9-12, however Miami could not get any closer the rest of the way and the Tigers took the second set, 25-18.
After falling behind 3-6 in set three, an 8-5 run by Miami tied the score at 11. The RedHawks followed that up with six consecutive points helped by kills from Leahy and Michele Metzler, as well as a block from Raseman and Metzler. With the score 21-16 in favor of Miami, kills from Leahy, Griffin and Hallie Hanks set up match point at 24-18. Two points later, Raseman put down the kill off an assist from Atteberry to give the RedHawks a 25-19 win.
Miami fell behind 4-8 to begin the fourth set. From there a 10-1 run by Pacific put the match out of reach for the RedHawks. The Tigers won the set 25-12 to take the match 3-1.
Leahy tied a career high with 17 kills. Metzler also had double digit kills with 10. Lisa Treadway led with 11 digs, while Atteberry recorded 35 assists.
The RedHawks return to action next Friday, Sept. 18 when they travel to Stephen F. Austin for the LadyJack Invitational. The opener against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is scheduled for 1 p.m. (EDT).
