Final Stats

ST. LOUIS - In a very competitive match, Miami volleyball fell to 20th-ranked Saint Louis Saturday in its second game at the Active Ankle Challenge. The RedHawks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Billikens improve to 2-0.

The first set was back and forth as neither team was able to build a lead of more than two points. Megan Griffin had three early kills to help lead the RedHawks. With the score tied at 18, Saint Louis recorded two consecutive points to open its first two-point lead of the set at 20-18. After a Miami timeout, Andrea Atteberry and Maria Leahy each scored kills to tie the match at 20. The Billikens scored the next two points to take a 22-20 lead, but a kill from Michele Metzler, an attack error by Saint Louis and a kill from Hallie Hanks gave Miami set point at 24-23. The Billikens fought it off with a kill on the next point, and scored the next two points to take first set, 26-24.

Miami fell behind 3-11 in set two. Leahy tried to get the RedHawks back into it with back-to-back kills, but an 11-4 run by Saint Louis pushed the lead to 22-9. That proved to be too much for Miami to overcome as it fell 12-25.

After spotting Saint Louis the first two points of the third set, a service error and a Hanks kill off an Atteberry assist quickly tied it back at two. The teams traded points until the score was tied at 10. Hanks, Leahy and Cassie Farrell each had kills as part of a 6-2 run that gave Miami a 16-12 advantage. With the RedHawks leading 17-16, two kills each from Griffin and Amy Raseman sparked a 7-1 run that gave Miami set point at 24-17. Two points later, Hanks scored a kill off a Billiken blocking error to give the RedHawks the 25-19 win. Miami hit .455 for the set.

Hanks recorded two quick kills as the RedHawks went up 3-1 early in the fourth set. The score stayed close thoughout until Saint Louis found itself ahead 20-19. A Jenn Caylor kill and two service aces from Hanks put Miami in front 22-20. With the score 23-22, Metzler recorded a kill to give the RedHawks set point. However, like the first set, the Billikens were able to fight it off as they scored the final four points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

For the match Leahy recorded 16 kills, only one off her career high. Hanks had 13 kills and Griffin scored 10. Lisa Treadway led the way with 23 digs, while Atteberry had a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs. The RedHawks hit .264 for the match, compared to Saint Louis' .244.

Miami concludes play at the Active Ankle Challenge with a 6 p.m. (EDT) match against Alabama.
