BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Three-hit efforts by sophomore Adam Eaton (Springfield), senior Tommy Nurre (Cincinnati) and sophomore Jon Edgington (Cincinnati), and a ninth-inning save by junior right-hander Jamaal Hollis (Chicago, Illinois) led Miami to a 9-6 non-conference baseball victory at Indiana Tuesday.
A four-run fifth inning, featuring three singles, two walks and two sacrifice flies, helped Coach Dan Simonds's RedHawks improve their record to 22-18 and win their second consecutive game.
Eaton, who scored two runs, and Nurre, who knocked in two, both were three-for-four at the plate against Indiana. Edgington had three hits in five at bats, including a double and a triple. He also scored twice and had two RBI.
Miami jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on an RBI double by senior Chris Nadeau (Saline, Mich.) and an RBI single by Nurre.
Indiana tied the score at 2-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The RedHawks tallied four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-2 lead. Consecutive singles by Edgington, freshman Ryan Curl (Columbus) and Eaton loaded the bases. Edgington and Curl were walked home on consecutive bases on balls to senior Jordan Petraitis (Canal Fulton) and Nadeau, then Eaton and Petraitis came home on sacrifice flies by Nurre and senior Eric Darlage (Powell).
In the sixth inning, Edgington tripled to right field, then scored on Curl's sacrifice fly. Indiana tallied one run in the bottom of the sixth, and Miami maintained its four-run lead, 7-3.
Coach Tracy Smith's Hoosiers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut Miami's lead to 7-6.
The RedHawks added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth, featuring a double down the left-field line by sophomore Brad Gschwind, to make the score 9-6. The Hoosiers threatened in the bottom of final frame, getting runners to second and third with one out, but Hollis shut the door on Indiana by getting the final two IU hitters to fly out. The save was Hollis's second of the season.
Miami starter Lance Kingrey (Hilliard) pitched the first four innings of the game and got the win to improve his record to 1-2. It was the first victory of Kingrey's collegiate career.
