Final Stats

OXFORD, Ohio--Miami University's baseball team (15-13; 6-4 Mid-American Conference) gutted out a 6-5 win in a 13-inning battle against the Central Michigan University Chippewas (14-18; 4-6 MAC) in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In the bottom of the 13th inning, sophomore second baseman Jon Edgington scored the game-winning run off a freshman center fielder Ryan Curl single when the throw to tag Edgington out at third went into the Miami bullpen.

Freshman reliever Jordan Jankowski moved to 3-0 on the season, pitching the final 4.0 innings. Jankowski struck out three, walked two and gave up no runs off two hits.

Five RedHawks had multiple-hit games, led by junior designated hitter Zak Hatfield's 3-for-5, two-RBI, one-run performance.

Two RedHawk errors in the top of the third inning proved costly as the Chippewas put two unearned runs on the board. Rhett Goodmiller put down a sacrifice bunt to allow Robbie Harman to score. A Miami throwing error then allowed Billy Anderson to cross home to give CMU a 2-0 lead.

More errors in the top of the fifth inning led to another Chippewa run as Anderson scored on a Miami fielding error to up the CMU lead to 3-0.

Miami put its first run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when an RBI single by Edgington plated sophomore shortstop Brad Gschwind. Sophomore catcher Adam Weisenburger crossed home off a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Jordan Petraitis to cut the Chippewa lead to one, 3-2.

The RedHawk lead was short lived, however, as CMU tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning off a two-RBI single by Ricky Clark.

Senior first baseman Tommy Nurre was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the RedHawks before junior designated hitter Zak Hatfield stepped to the plate and launched a home run over the right field fence to again put the RedHawks within one run of the Chippewas, 5-4.

CMU threatened to pad their lead in the top of the ninth. With one out and bases loaded, sophomore reliever Samuel Dawes threw a pair of strikeouts to get Miami out of the inning.

Freshman center fielder Ryan Curl belted a critical triple down the right field line to put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. Eaton grounded out in the next at-bat, but Curl was able to cross home to even the score, 5-5. After Petraitis was walked, a long single by left fielder Chris Nadeau moved Petraitis to third, putting the winning run in scoring position, but CMU's Chris Kupillas threw a strikeout to get out of the inning.

Although both threatened at times, neither teams were able to score until Miami's game-winning run by Edgington in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Central Michigan received all 12 of its hits from four players, led by Dale Cornstubble, who went 5-for-6, and Anderson, who was 4-for-7.

Notes: Jon Edgington extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning.
