OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami closed out its 2009 home tennis Saturday by eeking out a doubles win, then sweeping all six singles matches in a 7-0 Mid-American Conference victory over Toledo on Saturday at Withrow Courts. The victory was the seventh in a row overall and third straight sweep for the RedHawks, who improve to 11-6 overall and 6-0 in league play.
The doubles point came down to the match at the No. 3 position after each team posted a relatively easy win. Anastasia Dracheva and Monica Gorny earned an 8-1 victory at No. 2, before Toledo's No. 1 team defeated Stephanie Danesis and Megan Martzolf 8-2. Riekie Honiball and Brintney Larson were tied at 3-3 when they rattled off four straight games enroute to an 8-4 win.
By winning two of the three matches, Miami opened a 1-0 lead for the ninth straight time.
Martzolf and Danesis shook off their doubles defeat quickly, each winning her singles match to put Miami up 3-0. Marzolf took a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4, before Danesis captured a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively.
Larson clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5, then Dracheva posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Gorny (No. 1) and Honiball (No. 6) completed the sweep with 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-3 wins, respectively.
"Once again, our team competed hard," said Head Coach Howard Joffe. "With each match, our confidence is growing. We are starting to play well and this is a good time of year for that."
Miami concludes the regular season next Friday and Saturday with a road trip to Western Michigan and Bowling Green. The RedHawks need just one win to clinch a share of the league title, while a weekend sweep gives them the outright championship.
