CINCINNATI, Ohio - For the second straight day a late inning Miami (12-12, MAC 3-3) rally fell short as Xavier University (14-9) held on for a 9-7 victory Wednesday at Hayden Field.
The RedHawks threatened in the ninth, Jon Edgington (Cincinnati) led off with a single, pinch hitter Kyle Weldon (Mason) walked and Adam Eaton (Springfield) singled to load the bases. Jordan Petraitis (Canal Fulton) singled to score Edgington and Weldon and moved Eaton to third. After Chris Nadeau (SALINE, Mich.) struck out, Tommy Nurre (Cincinnati) hit an RBI double to cut the lead to two. Xavier intentionally walked Zak Hatfield (Fort Wayne, Ind.) to reload the bases, but pitcher Jordan Conley struck out the final two RedHawks to the Musketeers the win.
Xavier came out swinging, scoring seven runs in the first three innings but Miami was able to keep the game in reach by scoring once in the third inning, twice in the fourth and adding another run in the sixth. Ryan Curl (Columbus) scored Miami's first run when Nurre was hit by a pitch in the third inning with the bases loaded.
Petraitis tried to bring the team back when he drove in Edgington on a single in the fourth. Nadeau continued the comeback in the fourth with an RBI single to left. Eaton added a solo home run to left in the sixth inning to make it a 9-4 Xavier lead but it was not enough to rally the RedHawks to the win.
The RedHawks are back in action Friday, April 3 when they travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan to take on Mid-American Conference foe, Western Michigan at 3 p.m.
