OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami swept the doubles matches, then won five of six singles to defeat Ball State 6-1 in Mid-American Conference tennis action Saturday afternoon. The victory was the third straight for the RedHawks, their longest winning streak of the season.
The match was plagued by rain early in the singles play, forcing the teams to move 15 miles from Withrow Courts on campus to the Riverside Racquet Club in Hamilton. The change of venues did not affect the Miami, who improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in league play.
The RedHawks captured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Megan Martzolf and Cara Wald easily dispatched Hanna Oman and Rachel Surowiec, 8-1 at No. 3, then Monica Gorny and Anastasia Dracheva clinched a 1-0 Miami lead with an 8-3 win over Georgina Thomson and Dena Boulieris at No. 1. Riekie Honiball and Brintney Larson finished the effort 8-5 over Kylee Johnson and Sarah Hebble at No. 2.
Singles play featured seveal streaks in favor of Miami. At No. 1, Gorny won the first five games outdoors, before losing the first indoors. She then rattled off seven straight games to earn a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Martzolf followed suit, winning the first set outside, 6-0. After dropping back-to-back games indoors, she won the last six for a 6-2 decision, putting Miami up 3-0.
Dracheva clinched the match with her win at No. 3. She lost the first game of her match and was never challenged again, posting a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Miami also claimed wins from Wald, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 and from Larson, 7-5, 6-0 at No. 4. The lone victory from Ball State (5-7, 0-2) came at No. 5, where Georgina Thomson outlasted Riekie Honiball by a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) count.
Miami returns to action Friday when it hosts defending MAC Tournament Champion Buffalo at Withrow Courts. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
