Final Stats

OXFORD, Ohio--Bolstered by an eight-run first inning and further spurred by six runs in the fourth, Miami University's baseball team (10-10; 1-3 Mid-American Conference) rolled to a 15-1 win against Eastern Michigan (4-19; 0-4 MAC) in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

Senior pitcher Matt Erwood pitched 7.0 innings to earn the win and move to 3-2 on the season. Erwood threw eight strikeouts while giving up just six hits. Five RedHawks had multiple-hit games, led by sophomore shortstop Brad Gschwind, who went 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs and an RBI for the RedHawks, while senior first baseman Tommy Nurre went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

After an impressive 16-5 win on Wednesday where they scored five runs in the top of the ninth at Dayton, Miami picked up right where they left off, compiling a scorching eight runs in the opening inning against Eastern Michigan. A junior designated hitter Zak Hatfield three-run home run and a freshman centerfielder Ryan Curl two-RBI triple highlighted the inning for the RedHawks.

Nurre belted a lead-off home run in the bottom of the second inning to extend the RedHawk lead to 9-0.

After a scoreless third inning, Miami pounded out another six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to build a commanding 15-0 lead. RedHawk hitters hammered three doubles in the inning, including a senior second baseman Jon Edgington two-RBI double and a sophomore right fielder Adam Eaton RBI-double.

Eastern Michigan put its lone run of the game on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Jim Gulliver doubled to plate Aaron Powell to make the score 15-1 in favor of the RedHawks.

Neither team would score over the remaining innings to hand Miami its first MAC win of the season and also a home-opening win.

Jordan Goldschmidt picked up the loss on the mound, dropping to 0-5 on the season.
