LOUISVILLE, Ky. - With temperatures in the 30's and the windchill in the 20's, the Miami University softball team used a six-run sixth inning to defeat IUPUI 7-3 in its second game at the Louisville Red and Black Tournament Saturday. The RedHawks improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Jaguars fall to 1-9. Due to the subfreezing temperatures in Louisville, Miami's second game of the day against Western Illinois was canceled.
The RedHawks got on the board first when Kathryn Russette singled home Sarah Billstrom in the top of the second inning. While Miami had several threats after that, including having the bases loaded in the fifth inning, it was unable to get a run across until the sixth, while IUPUI scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, with Ashley Gartland on first base and one out, Lauren Odom doubled her over to third base. Jordan McElroy was then intentionally walked to load the bases. That strategy did not pay off for the Jaguars as Daniela Torres singled home Gartland and a wild pitch scored Odom to tie the game at three. Meghan Mawn doubled to score two more runs home, which was followed by Jenna McGivney doubling home Mawn. Miami closed the scoring when Sarah Billstrom reached on a fielding error, scoring McGivney.
Jessica Simpson pitched the final 2 and 2/3 innings in relief of starter Meredith Linch to earn the win. She gave no runs on two hits with three strikeouts. McElroy finished the day 3-for-4 with one run scored, while Mawn was 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.
Miami concludes play at the Red and Black Tournament with two games Sunday. The RedHawks will have a rematch with IUPUI at 11 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. game with Western Illinois.
