MARIETTA, Ga. - A terrific pitching performance from freshman pitcher Jessica Simpson, as well as a key triple in the bottom of the first inning from junior Sarah Billstrom led Miami to a 2-1 win over Memphis in its final game at the K-Club Classic Sunday. The RedHawks improve to 4-5 overall after two weekends.
Miami got both of its runs in the first inning. Kathryn Russette and Meghan Mawn led the inning off with back-to-back singles, and moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Jenna McGivney then hit a sacrifice fly to score Russette, while Billstrom followed with the triple that scored Mawn.
That turned out to be all the run support Simpson needed as she held the Tigers to six hits, giving up only a home run in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh, Memphis hit a triple with two outs, but Simpson finished the game off by striking out the final batter. She had seven strikeouts on the day.
Mawn had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one run scored.
The RedHawks will participate in the Louisville Red and Black Tournament next weekend. Miami will face 22nd-ranked Louisville on Friday, February 27 at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 28, the RedHawks will take on IUPUI at 11 a.m., followed by Western Illinois at 4 p.m. It will be rematch time on Sunday, March 1 as Miami will face IUPUI at 11 a.m. and Western Illinois at 1 p.m.
