No. 6/7 Miami Defeats Lake Superior 2-1

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - No. 6/7 Miami (17-8-4) picked up a 2-1 victory Friday against Lake Superior State behind 26 saves by Cody Reichard (Celina, Ohio).
Miami took an early lead as Tommy Wingels (Wilmette, Ill.) fired a rebound in at 14:57 of the first period. Justin Vaive (Toronto, Ont.) fired a shot that was stopped by Laker goalie Pat Inglis but not controlled and Wingels was there to capitalize. Kevin Roeder (Glenview, Ill.) earned the second assist as he stole the puck in neutral nice with a solid check along the boards. The RedHawks would extend their lead with the first goal career goal for Vincent LoVerde (Chicago, Ill.). Chris Wideman (St. Louis, Mo.) dumped the puck into the offensive zone and it was collected by Alexandre Lacombe (Orleans, Ont.). Lacombe worked the puck back to the blue line and LoVerde, who used a hard slap shot to give Miami a two goal advantage at 17:18. Lake Superior State cut the lead to one 17 seconds later with a goal by Dillin Stonehouse.
Neither team took a penalty in the first period. Reichard stopped all nine shots he faced in net for Miami.
The RedHawks and the Lakers both battled in the second period with neither team able to find the net. Reichard led the way in the second stanza making six saves including stops of several point blank attempts by the Lakers. Miami was two-of-two on the penalty kill and Lakers killed off the only man advantage for the RedHawks.
The two teams skated even again in the third period and Miami claimed the victory.
Miami and Lake Superior State will be back in action tomorrow inside Abel Arena at 7:05 p.m. The game will be radio broadcasted on the ISP radio network by Greg Waddell and streamed on www.MURedHawks.com.

- Miami played its first game of the season without either Will Weber (Gaylord, Mich.) or Matt Tomassoni (Carol Stream, Ill.) in the lineup. Weber was serving his suspension for his disqualification against Bowling Green. Tomassoni did not make the road trip due to illness.
- Brandon Smith (Pepper Pike, Ohio) played his first career collegiate game as a defenseman on Friday night.
- Vincent LoVerde (Chicago, Ill) scored his first career goal at 17:18 of the first period.
- The win is the 100th for the senior class. Ice Hockey joins baseball volleyball and softball as the only Miami sports to post 100 wins by a single class.
