Miami Post-game Notes
Saturday, December 12, 2009
Steve Cady Arena - Oxford, Ohio
No. 1 Miami vs. Ohio State
Miami's strong penalty kill was tested early, as the RedHawks killed a penalty just minutes into the game for their 24th straight penalty kill, which is Miami's longest streak without allowing a power-play goal this season. Ohio State capitalized on the RedHawks' next penalty, however, with their second goal of the game in the second period, snapping Miami's streak of 24 straight penalty kills dating back to Nov. 28 when North Dakota scored with a man advantage in the second period. The 'Hawks finished 2-of-3 on the penalty kill in the contest and have allowed just six power-play goals to the opposition in their last 69 chances.
Ohio State's goal 11:59 into the second period snapped Miami's school-record shutout streak at 239:13. The scoreless streak ranks as the fourth-longest shutout streak in NCAA history. The RedHawks had pitched three straight shutouts entering Saturday night and had not allowed a goal since the second period against North Dakota on Nov. 28 when the UND scored with 2:14 left in the period.
At 7:07 of the third period, freshman defenseman Steven Spinell got Miami on the board when he notched his first-career goal, sliding the puck between Buckeye goalie Dustin Carlson's legs. It was also his first-career point.
Despite facing a two-goal deficit entering the third period, Miami rallied to even the game at two apiece. It was the fifth time this season the RedHawks trailed by two goals and all five times Miami has come back to tie the game. The 'Hawks went 0-2-2 in those first four games but completed the comeback Saturday with the 4-2 win, giving Miami its first two-goal comeback win since Jan. 31, 2009 against Bowling Green, which the RedHawks won 3-2.
Junior forward Andy Miele scored a pair of goals in Saturday's win, tallying the game-tying and game-winning goals, both in the third period. It was his second multi-goal game of the season and sixth of his career. The two goals tied his career high and gave him seven on the year. Miele's two goals marked the second straight game a RedHawk had a multi-goal game as Tommy Wingels scored four goals Friday night against the Buckeyes.
Miami scored four third-period goals, tying for the most in any period this year. The RedHawks have accomplished the feat four other times this year--three times in the second period (Oct. 16 and 17 at New Hampshire and Oct. 30 at Northern Michigan) and once in the third period (Friday night at Ohio State). Including tonight, Miami has scored 11 goals in the third period in its last three games.
Senior forward Jarod Palmer scored his seventh goal of the year on an empty net in the third period. It was Miami's first empty-net goal of the season and first since April 9, 2009 vs. Bemidji State in the National Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. He also had an assist for his fourth multi-point game of the season. Palmer also tallied a goal last night against the Buckeyes.
Miami improved to 1-2-2 this year when trailing after two periods, earning its first win when trailiing after two periods since Jan. 31, 2009 vs. Bowling Green.
The weekend sweep was the fifth overall and fourth in the CCHA this season for the RedHawks. Miami has now swept Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Northern Michigan and St. Cloud State.
With the sweep, the RedHawks are now 10-1-1 against Ohio State in their last 12 meetings and lead the all-time series 60-56-11, including 37-21-4 in Oxford.
