LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior guard Kenny Hayes drilled a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to knot the game 70-70, but No. 4/5 Kentucky's John Wall hit the go-ahead jumper with just over a second remaining to lift the Wildcats to a 72-70 come-from-behind win over Miami University at Rupp Arena on Monday evening.
Junior forward Nick Winbush drained 8-of-10 3-pointers en route to a career-high 26 points to lead all players. He added a team-high-tying six rebounds to his effort and was 9-of-13 from the field. Winbush's eight 3-pointers tie for third on Miami's single-game charts.
He spearheaded Miami to a team single-game record 15 3-pointers.
A superb team effort catapulted Miami (0-2) to an 18-point first half lead against the Wildcats. The RedHawks took their first lead of the game off a Winbush trey at 15:29, 11-8. Miami used a scorching 22-2 run from 12:02 to 7:04 to seize a commanding 36-18 lead. The scoring surge was ignited by back-to-back treys from Hayes and capped by a trio of 3-point bombs from Winbush. Freshman guard Orlando Williams also drained a trey during the run, while sophomore guard Kramer Soderberg and junior guard/forward Antonio Ballard each chipped in buckets.
Kentucky (2-0) came back with a 15-0 run to close within three points with 1:16 to play, 36-33. Winbush drained his sixth 3-pointer of the half to push the Miami lead back to six points with 45 seconds remaining, 39-33, but UK's Darnell Dodson retaliated with a trey with 19 seconds remaining to cut the Miami lead to three at the half, 39-36.
Miami shot an impressive 54.2 percent in the first half, including 62.5 percent from 3-point range.
Early in the second half, Kentucky pulled within one point off a pair of Wall free throws, 39-38. Miami extended its lead to seven off buckets by sophomore forward Julian Mavunga, Winbush and Hayes, 45-38. A DeMarcus Cousins tip-in at 7:24 gave Kentucky its first lead since 13:05 of the first half. Darius Miller hit a 3-pointer at 7:07 to take a five-point advantage, tying its largest lead of the game, 57-52. It was a tug-of-war for the remaining minutes. Hayes hit the game-tying trey amidst a wild finish before Wall's go-ahead bucket to allow Kentucky to escape with the win.
Miami shot 47.9 percent from the field for the game, including 57.7 percent from beyond the arc.
In addition to Winbush's career effort, Hayes added 16 points and five assists, while Mavunga tallied six boards.
Kentucky was led by Wall with 19 points, while Patrick Patterson tallied 17 points and 10 boards and Cousins compiled 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Miami returns to action this weekend at the Basketball Travelers Tournament hosted by New Mexico. The RedHawks play Louisiana Tech at 8:15 p.m. (ET) on Friday.
