OXFORD, Ohio - Miami women's swimming and diving cruised to victory over defending Division III National Champion Kenyon College 183-103, winning 15 out of 16 events Saturday afternoon at the Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center.
Bekka Westrick won two individual events and a relay and Kasey Carpenter, Kelsey Anagnos, Allison Way and Kelsey Vehr each won two events to lead the RedHawks, who set numerous personal and team season-best marks in the meet.
"We had a good week of practice," head coach Dave Jennings said. "I think the team was more loose and relaxed than last weekend when we were on the road."
Westrick won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles in times of 23.96 and 52.86, respectively. Her time in the 100-yard freestyle was the fastest by a RedHawk this season. She also anchored the winning 200-yard medley relay team.
Carpenter took first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.37) with her fastest swim of the season in the event. She also won the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.23), setting a team-best mark this season.
Anagnos finished first in both diving events and Way won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.08) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.77) with a personal season-best swim. Vehr won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.55) and set a season-best for the RedHawks in the 400-yard IM (4:31.52)
The RedHawks opened up a commanding 28-8 lead after the first two events, taking first and second in both. The 200-yard medley relay team of Leah Thornton, Kelsey Vehr, Maegan O'Connor and Westrick won in a time of 1:45.42 and Claire Dickmann took first in the 1000-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 10:27.78.
The team continued to pull away over throughout the meet, with wins by Megan Brunn in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.26) and Leah Thornton in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.33).
Sarah Radke, Miami's top returning sprinter from a season ago, competed for the first time this year, returning from injury to finish fourth in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles (25.05 and 53.76, respectively). Her time in the 100 free was less than a second behind the winner, despite only training for the last three weeks.
The RedHawks dive back into action Dec. 3-5 when they host the Miami Invitational at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
