Competition Begins at Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami men's and women's diving kicked off the 16th Annual Miami Invitational Thursday night at the Nixon Aquatic Center. Through the first two events of the meet, the women are currently in second-place out of eight teams while the men sit in fifth-place out of six teams.
The women's relay team of Allison Way, Chelsey Bruington, Bekka Westrick and Kasey Carpenter opened the meet with a third-place finish in the 800-freestyle relay, touching the wall in 7:33.34. Florida Gulf Coast won the event with a time of 7:27.96.
Claire Dickmann and Sarah Bullock helped the RedHawks narrow the gap between themselves and the meet-leading FGCU Eagles with a second- and fifth-place finish, respectively in the 1650-yard freestyle. Dickmann swam a season-best time of 17:03.63 and Bullock notched a personal-best by more than seven seconds with a time of 17:09.40. The event concluded the meet's first session and cut the Eagles' lead to 134-126. Emory's Liz Horvat won the event in 16:44.23.
Brendan Melling, Darin Smith and Trevor Tilly, who finished 10th, 13th and 17th, respectively, in the 1650 freestyle to combine for 49 points, led the men. In the evening's only other event, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the RedHawks were disqualified for a false start, leaving them in fifth place.
Oakland's Tim Montague won the 1650 freestyle and the Golden Grizzlies also finished first in the 800-freestyle relay, yet are currently in third place with 146 points. Cincinnati is currently leading the men's competition with 160 points.
The Miami Invitational continues Friday with prelims starting at 9 a.m. and finals following at 6 p.m. Friday morning's events include the 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 400 IM, and 50 freestyle.
