OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami women's swimming and diving team lost to Purdue 181.5-116.5 Friday night at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center.
Miami faced tough competition in the Boilermakers, who finished 21st at the NCAA Championships last season.
Purdue jumped out to an early lead and held on despite Miami's best efforts to come back at the end of the meet.
Top performers for the RedHawks were juniors Kelsey Vehr and Megan Brunn. Vehr, Miami's record-holder in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, won both events with times of 1:03.12 and 2:19.01, respectively. She also came from behind to touch in second place in the 200-yard IM (2:10.16). Brunn won the 200 IM (2:08.02), finished just behind Vehr in the 200 breast (2:19.47) and claimed third in the 100 breast (1:05.40).
The RedHawks had reason to be excited about the upcoming season and the future because of the performances of the team's freshmen, particularly Leah Thornton, Corrine Bangs and Danica Roskos.
Thornton tied for the win in the 100-yard butterfly (57.00) and was Miami's top swimmer in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing third (57.33). She was also a member of Miami's second-place 200-yard medley relay team.
Bangs won the three-meter dive with a score of 313.80. Roskos finished second in both the one- and three-meter diving events.
Head coach Dave Jennings's RedHawks are back in action Saturday in two meets. Half of the team will face Xavier at 1 p.m. at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford while the rest of the team will travel to Louisville to take on the Cardinals at 2 p.m.
