OXFORD, Ohio - A late penalty corner conversion by the Michigan Wolverines spoiled senior day for the Miami field hockey team, as the Wolverines came away with a 3-2 victory. Miami falls to 9-8-0 overall, while Michigan improves to 7-9-0.
Senior Maggie Marcum struck with only goal of the first half when she stole the ball from the defender in the box and shot it past the goalie at the 7:39 mark. The teams played conservatively for the rest of the period as goalie Kelsey Dean stopped a late Michigan corner attempt to keep the RedHawks in front at halftime.
The Wolverines struck with the first two goals of the second half to take the lead. Miami did not give in and scored the equalizer on a penalty corner, as Katie Brightwell shot the ball in from the left corner off a pass from Amanda Seeley at the 60:48 mark. The score remained that way until Alicia Mayer tipped in a Meredith Way pass at 66:58 to give Michigan the victory.
Katie Brightwell led the way with five shots, including three on goal. Her sister Christine Brightwell had four shots, including two on goal. Dean made seven saves in net.
The RedHawks resume Mid-American Conference play next Sunday when they travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on Missouri State at noon (EDT).
