OXFORD, Ohio - With over 40 alumni in attendance for the Bicentennial Women's Reunion, the RedHawks completed a perfect weekend with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) win over Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Miami improves to 11-9 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles are 3-21 overall and 2-6 in the MAC.
Eastern Michigan opened an 8-3 lead early in set one. Two kills from Maria Leahy and one from Hallie Hanks helped pull the RedHawks to within two at 8-10. With the score 19-15 in favor of the Eagles, Leahy, Michele Metzler and Megan Griffin kills sparked a 6-3 run that closed the score to 21-22. Eastern Michigan recorded the next point, but Griffin scored three consecutive kills off Andrea Atteberry assists to create set point. On the next point, Miami earned a 25-23 victory when Griffin and Hanks teamed up for a block.
With the score tied at eight in the second set, a 5-1 run by Eagles put Eastern ahead, 13-9. Miami scored the next three points off kills from Leahy and Hanks and a service ace by Leahy, but Eastern eventually expanded the advantage to 21-18. Like the first set, Miami began its comeback with three consecutive kills to tie the score at 21. The Eagles score the next two points to go up 23-21, but two kills from Metzler, followed by a service ace from Leahy and a kill from Hanks gave the RedHawks a 25-23 set two win.
Set three was back-and-forth early until a service ace by Lisa Treadway sparked a run that found Miami up, 10-7. EMU countered with its own 8-3 run to take a 15-13 lead. With the score 18-16 in favor of the Eagles, two kills each from Leahy and Metzler were part of a 6-1 run by the RedHawks that put Miami in front, 22-19. The Eagles scored the next two points, but the RedHawks finished off the set with three of the final four points, the winner coming off a block by Griffin and Metzler.
For the second consecutive match, Leahy led Miami in both kills and digs. She had another double-double total of 15 kills and 13 digs. Hanks and Metzler each recorded 12 kills. Treadway had 11 digs, while Atteberry led the RedHawks with 46 assists.
Miami returns to the road next week when it travels to Toledo on Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. match.
