This weekend is an exciting weekend for Miami Athletics as we welcome back all former female student-athletes for the Women's Bicentennial Reunion. (MORE INFORMATION) Nearly all of the in-season women's sports will compete at home this weekend in conjunction with this special reunion weekend.
Congratulations to cross country seniors Kevin Silver and Kelsey McHugh, who were tabbed the MAC men's and women's MAC Cross Country Runners of the Week last week. (RELEASE) Both teams compete at the Pre-NCAA Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. this Saturday.
Football (0-6; 0-2 MAC) dropped a 16-6 decision at Northwestern last weekend. Junior Deandre Gilmore led all RedHawks with a career-high 12 tackles against the Wildcats, while recording three pass breakups. (RECAP) Miami rounds out a two-game road stretch at Ohio this weekend before returning to Oxford to play four of its last five games at home. Miami battles long-time rival Ohio at 2 p.m. in Athens. The radio broadcast of the game begins at 1 p.m. on the Miami ISP Sports Network affiliate stations.
No. 1/4 hockey (2-0-0) pulled out a thrilling 3-2 overtime win in its season opener against No. 13 St. Cloud State on Friday off a junior Carter Camper game-winning goal 1:52 into the overtime period. (RECAP) Two third-period goals lifted Miami to a 2-0 win against St. Cloud State on Saturday night. (RECAP) The RedHawks hit the road this weekend, traveling to New Hampshire for games on Friday and Saturday.
For the third-straight week Miami field hockey had a RedHawk tabbed MAC Offensive Player of the Week as senior forward Mary Hull shared the honor last week. (RELEASE) Field Hockey (8-7-0; 5-2-0 MAC) suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 20 Ohio State last Wednesday (RECAP), before falling to Kent State 5-2 on Saturday (RECAP) and being edged by Ohio 1-0 on Sunday. (RECAP) Miami hosts a pair of non-conference games this week, battling California at 2 p.m. Friday and Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Volleyball (9-9; 4-2 MAC) picked up a four-set win at Kent State (RECAP) on Friday but sustained a three-set loss at Ohio on Saturday. (RECAP) Miami hosts Central Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday and entertains Eastern Michigan at 5 p.m. on Saturday. In addition to the Women's Bicentennial Reunion events, Miami Volleyball also will be honoring its MAC Championship teams from 1997 and 1998 this weekend.
Senior Jodi Zwingelberg found the back of the net in the first half Friday afternoon to lead the women's soccer team (7-5-1; 3-2-1) to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Michigan, handing the Eagles their first Mid-American Conference loss of the season. (RECAP) On Sunday, the RedHawks were nipped at MAC-leading Central Michigan, 1-0. (RECAP) Miami continues a four-match road stretch, traveling to Akron on Friday and Ohio on Sunday.
Men's swimming and diving (1-1; 1-1 MAC) won seven out of 13 events to defeat Mid-American Conference newcomer University of Evansville, 132-111, Friday night in both teams' season opener. (RECAP) The RedHawks lost to Southern Illinois, another MAC newcomer, 152-91, Saturday afternoon. (RECAP) The team returns to action, hosting Xavier on Oct. 24.
Last week, the golf team finished 14th at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic. (RECAP) Junior Nathan Sutherland finished in a tie for fifth place at the event. The RedHawks return to action at the Bearcat Invitational Monday and Tuesday this week.
On Sunday, the softball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Northwestern and lost 8-2 to Loyola in its final fall games.
Baseball rounded out its Red & White intrasquad series last weekend. The Red Team swept the series, capturing a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 8-7 and 11-1. (RECAP)
