YPSILANTI, Mich.--Despite double victories by Miami University's Kelsey Vehr (So., Cincinnati) and Melissa Roemmele (Sr., Lexington, KY), host Eastern Michigan prevailed over the RedHawk women's swimming and diving team, 157-131, Saturday at EMU's Olds Student Recreation Center.
It was the first loss in Mid-American Conference dual meet competition and only the second defeat in 11 overall meets for Miami (9-2, 5-1 MAC). Coach Dave Jennings's squad went into the meet as the nation's top-rated Division I Mid-Major team.
EMU took an early lead, winning the first five events. It wasn't until Vehr's victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.69) event that a Miami swimmer finished first. Vehr shared first-place in the 200 breaststroke event when she and teammate Paige Iversen (Sr., New Hope, PA) swam to identical times of 2:20.00. Iversen's effort was just 28-hundredths shy of her all-time best at that distance. She placed second in the 200 breaststroke.
Roemmele took first place in both the one- and three-meter diving competition with respective scores of 256.50 and 257.18.
The only other RedHawk swimmer to win an event was Kasey Carpenter (So., Cincinnati) in the 200 backstroke (2:03.43). Carpenter placed second in the 200 backstroke.
Two of Miami's renowned relay units finished second to EMU swimmers. The 400 medley relay quartet of Malarie Schmidt (Sr., Batavia, IL), Vehr, Allison Way (Jr., Omaha, NE) and Alyson Schmidt (Sr., Maineville) was a runner-up, as was the 200 freestyle relay team of Allison Stevens (Sr., Laurel, MD), Malarie Schmidt, Way and Alyson Schmidt.
Other RedHawk second-place finishers included Sarah Bullock (So., Louisville, KY) in the 1000 freestyle, Stevens in the 200 free, Megan Brunn (So., Mansfield) in the 100 breaststroke and the 200 individual medley, Malarie Schmidt in the 200 butterfly, Alyson Schmidt in the 50 and 100 free, Miranda Kaltenborn (So., Memphis, TN) in the 200 backstroke, and Way in the 100 butterfly.
Miami's women swimmers and divers conclude the home portion of their schedule on Friday, February 6, at 7 p.m. with a dual meet against Ball State at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
