POST-GAME NOTES - January 10, 2009
Akron (8-6; 0-1 MAC) at Miami (8-5; 1-0 MAC)
The RedHawks played in their first overtime game of the season. Miami was 1-2 in overtime during the 2007-08 season. The last time it played in overtime was February 23, 2008 a 99-94 double overtime loss at Valparaiso. It's last win in overtime was a 61-58 win over Illinois on December 20, 2007.
With the win Miami is now 63-40 all-time in overtime.
Miami outscored Akron 8-0 over the first three minutes of the overtime session. They finished the period with a 16-3 advantage.
The RedHawks scored 16 points in the overtime period after only putting up 19 in the first half.
This was a battle between the MAC's two top defensive teams. Miami ranks first giving up 59.8 points per game coming into the contest, while Akron ranked second giving up 60.5 points per game.
Julian Mavunga equalled a career high for points on 4-for-7 shooting and a 4-for-6 effort from the free throw line.
It was the second consecutive game that Mavunga has been one of Miami's leading scorers.
Kramer Soderberg set a career high with 18 minutes played.
The first basket of the game for either team was scored by Carl Richburg at the 17:37 mark. He was fouled and completed the three-point play.
Miami opened the game on an 8-0 run. Akron did not score their first points until Brett McKnight scored off a rebound with 14:13 remaining in the first half.
Akron responded with an 11-1 run over the next three minutes to take its first lead of the game.
The first half ended in a 19-19 tie. It was the second straight game the RedHawks were tied at the half with their opponents. These are the only two games Miami has been tied at halftime.
Miami continued its strong defensive play to begin the second half, it didn't allow the Zips to score for the first 3:35 of the second half.
Despite being the top two three-point shooting teams in the MAC, Miami and Akron combined to shoot 9-for-39 (23 percent) from behind the arc during today's game.
