EVANSTON, Ill. - Despite matching the hosts with 12 shots and earning 12 penalty corners to Northwestern's five, the Miami University field hockey squad fell 3-1 to the Wildcats on Friday afternoon in Evanston, Ill.
Senior back Danielle Gaynor scored the lone RedHawk goal in the 12th minute off a penalty corner with an assist from Jessica Reading. Gaynor is now tied for the team lead with five points on two goals and one assist. The assist was Reading's second of the season.
"We started really well," said Miami head coach Jill Reeve after the game. "But, then we lost our footing after we scored our goal and Northwestern really made a push."
The Wildcats made that push with three unanswered goals, scoring in the 17th, 24th and 57th minute to earn their first win of the season.
The RedHawks had several opportunities late, including five penalty corners in the last 13 minutes of the game.
"At the end, we fought back into it but just couldn't seem to get the ball to drop in the goal," said Reeve, who added that, despite the loss, there were several bright spots, including junior back Katie Brightwell, who the MU coach said, "played an outstanding game."
Freshman goalkeeper Abbey Huck stopped two shots in 70 minutes. Gaynor led Miami with four shots on goal, while Christine Brightwell and Jackie Nguyen each had two. Alexandra Quinn had two goals for NU, while Elizabeth Dobbs scored the other.
The RedHawks, now 2-1 on the season, will face Sacred Heart University tomorrow in Evanston at 1 p.m. CT. The Pioneers are 0-2 on the season after falling to Connecticut and Maine last weekend.
