MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Facing top-tier teams from the SEC and ACC at the University of Tennessee Invitational on Friday evening did not change the winning ways of the Miami University men's cross country team.
The RedHawks, led by senior Pat Sovacool who won his third-straight race of the 2008 season, defeated host University of Tennessee, Georgia Tech, and south regional contender Belmont, as well as Bryan College, at the Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, Tenn. to win their third meet in as many chances to open the year.
Miami's 27 points edged the Volunteers' 33, while Belmont finished third with 75. The Yellow Jackets were fourth with 120, and Bryan was fifth at 150.
"Our guys ran a tremendous race," said Miami head coach Warren Mandrell. "If you look at the results, each of our top-5 edged their counterpart from Tennessee, who was winning the race, handily at the mile mark of competition, by seconds."
"It is not just great for us to beat two teams from the SEC and ACC, respectively," Mandrell added. "Belmont is also one of the top teams in the South Region, so that will improve our standing."
Sovacool's 24:54.22 in the 8K race was six seconds ahead of the second place finisher from Tennessee. Kevin Silver continued his stellar junior campaign with a fourth-place finish at 25:08.96. Senior Brad Untrauer was seventh overall, edging the top finisher from Belmont and the third-place UT runner with a time of 25:24.28.
"Pat Sovacool ran another good race. It was a tough course with a lot of roll (hills). Our runners were finishing strong, even with the rough terrain," explained Mandrell.
Miami's fifth-finisher, sophomore Chris Dennison was 13th overall with a time of 25:44.15, while sophomore Adam Martin was 15th at 25:49.68. Junior Ryan Dezso and junior Paul Krebs took 17th and 18th with times of 25:52.07 and 25:55.87, respectively.
Sophomore Robbie Fisher was 23rd with a time of 26:14.98. Junior Ben Famous had a time of 27:34.65, good for 42nd place.
The road of competition does not get any easier, though, for the undefeated RedHawks. Miami will travel to Notre Dame on Friday, Oct. 3 for the Notre Dame Invitational.
