BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Make it six straight wins for the Miami University volleyball team as the RedHawks defeated previously undefeated Western Kentucky University 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-21) in Friday's nightcap at the Western Kentucky Tournament. Miami improves to 6-2 on the season, while the Lady Toppers fall to 8-1.
After dropping a very competitive first set, 25-23, Miami fell behind 4-3 early in the second set. The RedHawks then went on their first real run of the match, scoring seven of the next nine points. Megan Griffin had two kills during that stretch, Emily Schroeder and Maria Leahy had a kill apiece and Andrea Atteberry scored a service ace to give Miami a 10-6 lead. Later on in the set, Leahy scored back-to-back kills to extend the RedHawk lead to 15-9. The Lady Toppers went on a 7-3 run to cut the score to 18-16, however, Schroeder responded with back-to-back kills to push the lead to 20-16. From there, the teams played even and Miami held on for a 25-21 win to even the match at one set apiece.
The RedHawks fell behind 10-6 to start the third set. From there, the two teams were even until WKU too a 14-9 lead. Miami went on a 6-1 run--featuring kills by Catherine Wolfe, Schroeder and Griffin--to knot the score at 15. With the score 17-16 in favor of the RedHawks, Atteberry set up Michele Metzler to record a strong kill to capture the serve. Atteberry then earned two more points on her serve, off a kill from Hallie Hanks and a block from Hanks and Metzler. WKU was able to push its lead to 23-21, but Leahy scored a kill to get set point, and Atteberry and Leahy teamed up for a block to score the 25-21 set three win.
Miami struck first in the fourth set with a kill by Schroeder and a force into an attack error. The teams played back-and-forth until the Lady Toppers went ahead 10-9. With the score 14-13 WKU, Metzler and Hanks combined on another block to tie the score. The RedHawks went on a 6-2 run to take a 20-16 lead led by kills from Schroeder, Griffin and Hanks. The Lady Toppers were able to pull as close as 22-20, but two kills by Metzler followed by a carrying error on match point gave Miami the fourth set 25-21.
The team hit .288 for the match and had 12 blocks overall. Schroeder led the team with 11 kills, while Atteberry had 37 assists and Zenz recorded 14 digs.
The RedHawks conclude play at the Western Kentucky Tournament Saturday when they face Furman at 5 p.m. (EST).
