Dwyer Finishes 19th in NCAA Decathlon Championship

DES MOINES, Iowa - After an impressive day one performance on Wednesday, Miami University junior Kevin Dwyer climbed two more spots to finish in 19th place in the decathlon at the 2008 NCAA Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The product of Arlington Heights, Ill. climbed as high as 17th place on Thursday, scoring as many as 702 points in one event.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Dwyer registered 824 points with a time of 15.21. He took first place in the first of seven heats and 14th overall among decathletes.
In the second event of the day, the junior had a long throw of 119-3 in the discus. He scored 591 points with that performance, which came on his first of three attempts, placing 18th in the event.
In the middle event, the pole vault, Dwyer cleared 14-1 ¼, scoring 702 points. He passed on the first two heights before clearing 13-9 ¼ on his first attempt and, later, clearing 14-1 ¼ on his second try. Dwyer missed all three attempts at 14-9.
Dwyer threw 185-9 in the fourth event, the javelin with his best mark coming on his first attempt. That performance earned him 687 points, moving him to 17th place overall, up nine spots from the beginning of the day's events.
In the final event of the competition, Dwyer scored 362 points with a time of 5:37.72 in the 1,500-meter run, placing 21st, dropping him to 19th place.
