RedHawks Fall in Second Game of Doubleheader, 14-10

May 3, 2008

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's baseball team came back from a four-run deficit early, but Akron scored a combined eight runs in the fourth and fifth innings leading the Zips to a 14-10 win over Miami in the second game of a Saturday Mid-American Conference doubleheader at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The Zips pounded out 23 hits compared to 11 for the RedHawks.

Akron (22-18; 7-7 MAC) jumped out of the gates strong, just as it did in the first game, as the Zips scored four runs on seven hits in the top of the first inning, but the RedHawks retaliated with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch to begin the inning and Eaton advanced to second base after junior Jordan Petraitis drew a walk. After a ground out moved both runners up a base, junior Tommy Nurre blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to close the gap to 4-3. The home run was Nurre's fifth of the season.

Miami (16-30; 6-14 MAC) quickly tied the game with one run on one hit in the second inning. Freshman Jon Edgington bunted for a single to lead things off, before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Edgington advanced 90 feet on a balk by Akron pitcher Zach Yike and then scored on a ground out by Eaton to tie the game at 4-4.

The Zips used a three-run home run by John Turk in the fourth inning and a three-run homer by Kurt Davidson in the fifth inning to help re-establish an eight-run lead, 12-4.

Akron scored one run in the eighth, before Miami scored three two-out runs in the eighth, making the score 13-7. Senior Evan Armitage kept the inning alive with a two out walk, then advanced to second base on a single through the right side by freshman John Hornke, before moving to third base on a walk by Edgington, which loaded the bases. Junior Josh Hula hit a bases-clearing double down the left field line, which cut the nine-run deficit to six runs, 13-7.

Akron scored one run in the ninth, but Miami rallied for three runs in the ninth, highlighted by a pinch-hit two RBI single by freshman Kyle Weldon. However, that would be all the scoring as the Zips defeated the RedHawks, 14-10.

Nurre led the RedHawks going 3-for-5 from the plate, including a three-run home run in the first inning. Hula also had three RBIs for Miami.

Turk went 5-for-5 for the Zips and drove in a career-high seven runs.

Miami and Akron conclude the three-game set on Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m.
