OXFORD, Ohio - Four home runs by Cincinnati propelled the Bearcats to a 13-7 win over Miami University's baseball team in non-conference action Tuesday evening. After Miami (7-21) tied the game by scoring five runs in the fifth inning, Cincinnati (16-11) used a six-run sixth inning to take control of the game.
Four walks, one hit and one Miami error put the RedHawks in an early hole as the Bearcats put three runs on the board in the first inning. The Bearcats had the bases loaded in the first inning with two outs when a Miami error allowed two unearned runs to score, before a single by Tyler Goodro brought in Cincinnati's third run of the inning.
Cincinnati tacked on another run in its half of the second inning as second baseman Josh Harrison drove a breaking ball into left-center field that crept over the wall to increase its lead to 4-0.
A lead-off single followed by a hit batter put runners on first and second base with nobody out for the Bearcats in the third inning. Cincinnati's next batter, Goodro, hit a three-run home run over the center field wall to increase Cincinnati's margin to 7-0.
Miami used two-out hits to produce two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Evan Armitage drew a walk and scored on a double into left-center field by junior Jordan Petraitis. Petraitis then scored on a looping single by junior Chris Nadeau as Miami closed its deficit to 7-2.
The RedHawks had timely hits in the fifth inning as Miami scored five runs to tie the game at 7-7. Armitage and Petraitis drew walks to start of the inning, before Nadeau drilled a double down the right field line to score Armitage and place runners on second and third with nobody out. After a ground out, junior J.D. Mynhier lined a single up the middle to plate Petraitis and Nadeau to close Miami's deficit to 7-5. Junior Eric Darlage followed Mynhier with a double down the left field line and Mynhier hustled all the way from first base to bring Miami within one run, 7-6. After an infield single by freshman Adam Eaton placed runners on the corners, junior Josh Hula singled to the shortstop to plate Darlage and tie the game at 7-7.
Cincinnati responded in the sixth inning as three consecutive singles loaded the bases for the Bearcats. After a strike out, Harrison hit his second home run of the game as he hit a grand slam over the left field fence to place Cincinnati back on top, 11-7. Three batters late, Mike Spina belted a two-run home run to left-center field lifting the Bearcat lead to 13-7.
A single by Petraitis, a walk by Nadeau and a Cincinnati error on a fielder's choice by Nurre loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning. However, two strike outs and a ground out ended the Miami scoring threat as the RedHawks fell to Cincinnati, 13-7.
Darlage led the RedHawks with three hits, while Nadeau and Mynhier finished with two RBIs apiece.
Miami concludes its home stretch tomorrow at 6 p.m. when the RedHawks welcome Indiana to McKie Field at Hayden Park.
