April 26, 2008

Box Score

OXFORD, Ohio - Miami University's battled until the end for the third straight game, but the RedHawks could not collect their third consecutive come-from-behind win as Miami dropped game two of a three-game series, 6-5, to Bowling Green State University Saturday evening in Mid-American Conference action at McKie Field at Hayden Park.

The RedHawks continued the momentum built from the night before by scoring three runs in the first inning. Freshman Adam Eaton led off the frame with a double into right-center field and he scored on a single up the middle by Miami's next batter, junior Jordan Petraitis, giving the RedHawks a 1-0 lead. Junior Chris Nadeau singled through the right side allowing Petraitis to advance from first base to third base. Two batters later, a single by junior J.D. Mynhier plated Petraitis upping Miami's lead to 2-0. A ground out moved Nadeau and Mynhier into scoring position and a single through the left side by sophomore Ben Eubank scored Miami's third run of the inning. The RedHawks forced Bowling Green starter Kevin Lighty to throw 29 pitches in the opening inning.

The Falcons (20-17; 7-7 MAC) scored five unanswered runs from the fourth inning to the seventh inning to take their first lead of the game, 5-3.

Miami (14-27; 5-12 MAC) continued its late-inning magic scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, 5-5. Junior Tommy Nurre and Mynhier led off the inning with back-to-back walks. Senior Evan Armitage laid down a sacrifice bunt that turned into an infield single, which loaded the bases with no outs. With Eubank at the plate, a balk was called on the Bowling Green pitcher, which plated Nurre and moved Mynhier and Armitage up ninety-feet. Eubank drew a walk to keep the bases loaded and freshman Jon Edgington tied the game with a single through the left side. Unfortunately, the RedHawks could not plate any more runs as the game went into the ninth inning with the score tied at 5-5.

Bowling Green manufactured a run in the top of the ninth courtesy of a one-out walk, a double and a sacrifice fly. Miami kept its hopes alive in the ninth as Nurre drilled a two-out double into left-center field, but a line out to first base gave the Falcons a 6-5 win.

Petraitis went 3-for-5 from the plate, with a RBI to lead the Red and White.

The RedHawks and Falcons play the rubber match of a three-game set at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Throwing out the ceremonial first pitch is 1932 Miami graduate and former Miami University baseball player, Clarence Wheeler. Wheeler turns 100 years young on Sunday and is the oldest known Miami baseball alumnus.
